AAD Annual Exhibition 2025

「彁」 – is a pseudo-character born out of mis-transcription; an accidental creation that carries no inherent meaning. Its lack of meaning has therefore rendered it a form of ‘ghost character’ – a linguistic specter that was mistakenly conjured.
The nature of the creative process – from inspiration to the materialization– has always been shaped by happenstance. Just as the ‘ghost character「彁」 emerged through a serendipitous mistake, it is often in moments of disarray when new meaning takes its first breath.
The 2025 Art and Design Annual Exhibition of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong has therefore been themed around 「彁」. Departing from the conventional Chinese rule of “read-as-it-appears” approach, this pseudo-character has been given a new interpretation and pronunciation – Gone – symbolizing the graduates’ imminent departures as they each set off on their own paths.
Though the 36 graduates present a wide range of themes, their works come together to form a new language in the exhibition space. Visitors are invited to this serendipitous convergence of inspiration, and to savor the unique stories behind each graduate’s journey. While this moment may mark the end of a four-year chapter, the serendipity that brought us together will continue to resonate, adding new verses to the unfolding narratives of our lives.
