AD2004 Art and Design Fairs and Markets – Talk by Italian Curators Francesco Urbano Ragazzi
FRANCESCO URBANO RAGAZZI is a curatorial duo composed by Francesco Urbano, PhD researcher in Film & Media Studies (IULM University), and Francesco Ragazzi, PhD candidate in Philosophy (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice / Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne). The team works in museum and academic contexts, but also in places outside of art institutions such as retail stores, scientific institutions and websites. At the base of this practice, inspired by the theories of the Fluxus movement and Situationism, there is the assumption that art is the institution of itself and can therefore be established anywhere.
After curating the second and third edition of The Internet Pavilion for the Venice Biennale (2011-2013), Francesco Urbano Ragazzi starts The Internet Saga, a research platform on the narratives that characterize the age of connectivity. In this framework the team has developed commissions for public and private institutions such as Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, VIII Bucharest Biennale, Maraya Art Center (Sharjah), CERN – European Organization for Nuclear Research.
The latest project of The Internet Saga was the exhibition of the American poet Kenneth Goldsmith, Hillary. The Hillary Clinton Emails, presented at the Cinema Teatro Italia during the Venice Biennale in 2019. On the other hand, the project that inaugurated The Internet Saga was a solo exhibition by filmmaker Jonas Mekas on the occasion of the 2015 Venice Biennale. Since that occasion, Francesco Urbano Ragazzi has established a deep collaboration with the Lithuanian artist and founder of the New American Cinema Group. By Jonas Mekas, the team also curated the first retrospective exhibition in the Asian continent (MMCA – National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, 2018); the last solo exhibition (Ásmundarsalur, Reykjavik International Film Festival, 2018); the publishing project Transcript 04 44′ 14″: Lithuania and the Collapse of the USSR (Humboldt Books, 2020).
Between 2016 and 2018 Francesco Urbano Ragazzi curated the Surface Conversion Project for Missoni in New York. Since 2017, Francesco Urbano Ragazzi has been the director of the archive and the estate of feminist artist Chiara Fumai. In this role, the duo curated her first solo exhibition in the United States (ISCP, New York 2019) and the first retrospective exhibition of her work. Between 2020 and 2021, the project will be installed at Centre d’Art Contemporain (Genève), Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci (Prato), La Loge (Brussels), La Casa Encendida (Madrid).
In 2022 Francesco Urbano Ragazzi will curate the 17th edition of LIAF – Lofoten International Art Festival in Norway.
