“With Language, City remains Man’s greatest form of Art”, according to Lewis Mumford. City itself is Art and is Culture. Every City has its own identity, City is Culture and is Language. City is primary constituent of Cultures, which are based on Languages. City is our history. Every building can be seen as a Museum. Man may demise but matters would remain, including urban fabrics. City is our memories. Through time and throughout human history, City changes but it never ceases to pertain to sustainable attributes of humanity and art of different Cultures with differentiations noticed all over the world. A closer look at art and architecture shows that they are often blueprints of a universal similarity among people of different Cultures. They span over a long period of time in way of simulacrum and/or anachronism. Buildings, for instance, have functions, symbols, innovation, and meanings. That is why architecture is a form of non-verbal expression of Cultures and is a Language augmented by the status that City and town planning are evolutionary dispositions that make up and shape our lives. Interactions among different Cultures are based upon Languages, and the City is essential to such exchanges. This lecture will look at architecture, town planning and transportation in Hong Kong and China as well, comparing the current state of affairs and relating them to our past and future with special reference to our counterparts in the West.
